The City of Owosso Police Department has received numerous reports today from residents who have been contacted by someone spoofing the Police Department's phone number.

In these calls, the caller identifies themselves as a police officer or detective and claims the recipient missed a court date related to a subpoena they supposedly signed.  The caller then says there is a warrant for their arrest, that they owe a large sum of money, and demands immediate payment of a bond while threatening arrest if they do not comply.

These calls are a scam.

The Owosso Police Department will never:

  • Call you to tell you that you missed a court date.
  • Demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest.
  • Threaten you with immediate arrest if you do not send money.

If you receive one of these calls:

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Do not provide any personal or financial information.
  • Do not send money or purchase gift cards or cryptocurrency.
  • If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Owosso Police Department directly using its non-emergency phone number, 989-725-0590.
