Requesting City Records

The Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Public Act 442 of 1976, as amended, establishes procedures to ensure every citizen’s right to review or receive copies of documents possessed by government agencies.  The Act not only provides a procedure by which records can be obtained but also identifies records that are exempt from disclosure, establishes time-lines for responses and appeals, and defines the fees that may be charged for retrieval, reproduction, and redaction of requested documents.

To request records you are encouraged, but not required, to use the "FOIA Request for Records" form found to the right (if you do not use the form your written request should include the information noted on the form).  Completed forms should be submitted to:

FOIA Coordinator
Owosso Public Safety Building
202 South Water Street
Owosso, MI  48867

Fax:  989-725-0529
FOIACoordinator@ci.owosso.mi.us

The City is entitled to recover reasonable costs incurred in responding to a request.  You will be advised of that cost at the time you make your request, or soon thereafter.  Payment must be received before any documents will be released.

For more information regarding FOIA requests for records please consult the City’s Public Summary of FOIA Procedures and the FOIA Policy – Procedures and Guidelines located in the box to the right along with copies of the various forms used as a part of the FOIA request process.
