Department Overview
The Engineering Department provides technical assistance to the city
and
the public on matters related to Civil Engineering. One primary duty is
designing the annual street improve-ment project. The worst
streets, chosen from the annual Street Condition Ratings, are
recommended
to City Council for reconstruction. Engineering provides cost estimates
and assists the City Council in answering questions during Special
Assessment Public Hearings. Affected property owners along these streets
pay approximately 40% of the reconstruction costs, which can be spread
over 10 years. After approval, we develop the bid package for
distribution to contractors. Sealed bids are opened at the specified
time and the lowest responsible bidder is recommend to City Council for
award. Engineering inspects the work and tests the materials utilized
during the reconstruction. After appropriate approvals, payments are
recommended to the City Council.
Engineering administers the heavy maintenance of streets including
sealcoat, slurry seal, asphalt caps, and replacement of hazardous
sidewalks.
Engineering is responsible to build and maintain the Geographic
Information System (GIS) connecting public information pertaining to
each parcel.
